We don’t medicate symptoms in isolation. At Downtown Counseling Associates, we take time to understand the whole person—so medication decisions are careful, collaborative, and never rushed. If you’ve ever felt dismissed, hurried, or unsure about psychiatric care, you’re not alone. Our approach is intentionally different.
We encourage our clients to learn more about our in-house therapy services if they would benefit from it and if they’re interested.
Psychiatric care should not feel like a conveyor belt. At our clinic, appointments are designed for listening first, not jumping straight to prescriptions. We slow things down so you can talk openly about what you’re experiencing, ask questions, and fully understand your options.
Medication is never automatic—and never the only focus. It’s one tool among many, used thoughtfully and only when it truly fits the whole picture.
Many of our clients are adults and parents who have spent years coping quietly and are ready for support that actually takes time.
We also work closely with our therapy team when integrated care is appropriate.
We slow down.
Appointments are structured to allow time for conversation, not just symptom checklists.
We collaborate.
You’re part of every decision. We explain the “why,” not just the “what.”
We look at the whole picture.
Symptoms, stressors, life stage, medical history, therapy progress, and personal goals all matter.
We prescribe thoughtfully.
Medication is recommended carefully—not reflexively—and adjusted intentionally over time.
ADHD doesn’t look the same for everyone—especially in adults and women. We take time to understand how ADHD shows up in your daily life:focus, overwhelm, emotional regulation, burnout, anxiety, or feeling constantly behind.
Depression can be predictable. It can also be atypical and hard to understand. Sometimes even you don’t know it’s sadness and a lack of joy that are causing your symptoms. You just feel easily frustrated, overwhelmed, having trouble sleeping, etc. Together, our team gets to know you and your situation. We work alongside you to find a path towards a solution.
Our goal is clarity—not labels—and treatment plans that feel supportive, not overwhelming.
Your initial psychiatric appointment is designed to feel unhurried and conversational.
You can expect:
Many clients tell us this is the first time they’ve felt truly heard in a psychiatric setting.
We accept many insurance plans and also offer private-pay options. If you have questions about coverage, deductibles, or payment expectations, our team is happy to help you understand your options before scheduling. Check out our insurance explainer page here.
If you’re ready for psychiatric care that prioritizes understanding over urgency, we’re here. Thoughtful psychiatry starts with taking time—and that’s exactly what we do.
You have options when it comes to psychiatric treatment. Here’s how our approach compares:
✔ In-depth, unhurried appointments
✔ Careful, collaborative medication decisions
✔ Whole-person evaluation—not symptom-only
✔ Integrated therapy + psychiatry
✔ Consistent provider relationship
✔ Local, relational care
✖ Short, high-volume appointments
✖ Protocol- or algorithm-driven prescribing
✖ Limited context for complex symptoms
✖ Minimal coordination with therapy
✖ Frequent provider turnover
If you’re looking for fast and transactional, online care may be enough. If you want thoughtful, relational psychiatric care that takes time—you’ll feel the difference here.

No. Medication is never automatic at our clinic. We believe informed, shared decision-making matters. Some clients choose medication, some don’t, and some take time to decide. Our role is to guide—not push.
This is one of the most common concerns we hear. Our goal is never to dull your personality or emotions. We prescribe thoughtfully and conservatively, monitoring closely and adjusting carefully to support clarity—not numbness.
Yes. ADHD is more than a checklist. We take time to understand how symptoms show up in daily life—especially in adults and women, where ADHD often looks different and is frequently missed or misdiagnosed.
Appointments are intentionally structured to allow time for conversation, questions, and understanding your options. You won’t feel rushed in and out. For your first appointment, please allow at least 80-90 minutes. For any follow ups you schedule, these can often take less than 30 minutes if you don't have much to discuss or review.
Yes. When helpful, our psychiatric providers collaborate with our therapy team to ensure care feels cohesive and well-informed—not fragmented. Many of our clients find it very client to schedule their appointments at the same clinic.
However, we always encourage you to stick with you current provider(s) if you feel served and understood. There's no reason you can't receive services at two clinics in a collaborative manner— we'll be sure to make it easy to work with your current provider(s).
We accept many insurance plans and also offer private-pay options. Our administrative team can help you understand benefits, deductibles, and payment expectations before your appointment.
